Why Your Macros Can Be Perfect… But Your Calories Don’t Match

If you’ve ever thought:

“I hit all my macros perfectly… so why are my calories off?”

You’re not crazy.

And you’re not doing anything wrong.

This actually happens more than people think.

Here’s the simple explanation:

Calories are calculated from macros.

  • Protein = 4 calories per gram

  • Carbs = 4 calories per gram

  • Fat = 9 calories per gram

So in theory…

if your macros are accurate, your calories should match.

But in real life?

It’s not always exact.

Here’s why:

1. Apps and labels aren’t perfect

Food labels round numbers.

Tracking apps pull from different databases.

So small differences start to add up.

2. Fiber and “net carbs” get weird

Some apps count fiber differently.

Some lower calories because fiber isn’t fully absorbed.

Some don’t.

So two people can log the same food…

and get slightly different numbers.

3. Measuring isn’t always exact

This is a big one.

  • a “tablespoon” might not actually be a tablespoon

  • measuring cups vs food scale

  • database entries that aren’t accurate

None of this means you’re failing.

It just means tracking isn’t a perfect system.

Here’s what I want you to take away:

Stop trying to be exact to the calorie.

If you’re:

  • hitting your protein

  • eating balanced meals

  • staying consistent

You’re doing it right.

A small difference in calories (even 50–100) will not ruin your progress.

What will slow you down?

Overthinking it.

Starting over.

Or feeling like you “messed up.”

Inside MKH, we don’t chase perfection.

We build consistency.

Because your results don’t come from one perfectly tracked day.

They come from what you do over and over again.

If tracking feels confusing or overwhelming…

you don’t need to be more precise.

You need a simpler system.
